Notes On The Strings
These exercises are designed to teach you how to read music notation and TAB as well as memorize where the notes are on the strings of the guitar. Take your time, use the correct fingers for each fret (note), make sure your body and hand position is correct, and have fun. Each string can take you a few minutes or days depending on the student. The idea is to build muscle memory and brain memory together.
Do one string at a time, repeat the exercises until you are confident you can recall and play each note without assistance.
The note position (chord) diagrams below are a representation of the guitar neck and strings. The strings are numbered 1 through 6 right to left, as if the guitar is standing upright with the body down. The thick line is the Nut, frets start at one and go up from there toward the body of the guitar.
Tip: It can help memorize the positions where your fingers go if you say the note out loud as you play the note.
