The Names of the Strings

The six strings of a guitar are numbered from first to sixth starting from the thinnest string (closest to the bottom of the body) and counting up to the thickest string. The strings are numbered 1 through 6 each corresponding to a specific string. The names or numbers of the strings should be memorized.
Frets are numbered from the headstock to the body in order.

How to Hold the Pick

Hold the pick between your thumb and first finger. The thumb and the pick should form a 90 degree angle. The pick should stick out from under the thumb by approximately 1/2 inch or 1/3 of the pick.

Left Hand Technique

Your thumb should be on the back of the guitar neck toward the upper half. Be careful not to extend your thumb over the top of the neck. Your wrist should be low with space between your hand and the neck of the guitar.

The fingers on the left hand are numbered to allow for specific technique and ease of learning. The index finger is 1, middle finger 2, ring finger 3, pinky finger 4, and the thumb is T
